This class will cover the differences between Fusing and Soldering and will bring students to another level in their torch work. Two projects will be completed in Sterling Silver—a Fused Pendant and a Soldered Ring. Patina will also be introduced and students who choose to Patina their pieces will do so. Must have completed Beginning Soldering or have permission of instructor, provide work samples and pass a written test on basics and safety.

Designing with Wire Using the Wigjig Olympus
Taught by Murf Moorefield

Learn how to design with wire using the Olympus jig and how to use its movable pegs, larger super pegs and the jig's transparency to your advantage in your wire design work. Excellent for making easily reproducible designs.

This spiral pendant features a neat, repeatable method for securely setting faceted, un-drilled stones or small cabochons. The stone is set and then surrounded by petals of decorative wire coils. By permission of the designer, this class is being offered to teach this unusual technique using the copyrighted tutorial (the cost of this tutorial is incorporated into the class fee and is being forwarded to the creator). Magnification is recommended. Must have taken Beginning Wire Wrapping.

Learn to make this finely detailed earring and pendant set using 3 sizes of wire and simple hand tools. This project will use fine wire to stitch delicate wire shapes into a firm frame, and add small accent beads to highlight the design. Beginning wire workers welcome, but some experience will help. As the pieces are small and detailed, students should bring magnification as needed.

Students will take their Soldering skills to a new level by making two pendants which will introduce them to the many ways of bezel setting cabochons. These projects will include a step bezel and a bezel cup. Must have completed Jewelry Fusing and Soldering Intermediate Level.

Silver Soldering 4

Advanced techniques in silver working, including building a bezel and backing plate to fit a specific cabochon. This technique allows the silversmith to set stones of any size or shape. Must know soldering and basic techniques such as sawing and polishing as well as how to set cabs in bezels Successful completion of Soldering 3 meets these criteria.

Beginning Soldering

Learn the basics of jewelry soldering, including safety, types of torches and fuels, when to use easy, medium or hard solder, use of pickle, use of tumbler for polishing, filing correctly, and how to solder so that the joint is invisible.  Students will shape and cut rings, file and solder them, and forge and texture them to create a bracelet of their choice.  We will especially focus on the use of the torch so that each student will feel competent to complete projects on their own at home.  We will add a hand made clasp, and polish the finished piece in the tumbler.  This class is a prerequisite for advanced soldering classes.

Victorian Wire Wrap Bracelet
Guest Teacher Wendy Stevens

This beautiful cuff bracelet is a starburst of crystal energy! Students will be working with multiple wires and their choice of leaded glass beads or gemstones to vary their design to suit their taste. Bundling well is a must for this project so we are asking that students have some experience working with wire and pliers. Students can choose to work with Sterling Silver, Copper or Brass Wire. Project will be priced accordingly, so be prepared to indicate your choice at Registration.

Kumihimo with Soft Flex and Beads

Doug has mastered the problems involved with using Beading Wire with the soft Kumihimo disc. This, combined with his clever use of glass beads has produced a beautiful, supple bracelet which will hold up to wear. Don’t miss his finishing techniques on this piece!

Groovy Pendant and Bracelet
Taught by Murf Moorefield

Learn to use a Jewelry Bit to create a groove around your stone, then set it with Sterling Silver. Students will make a wire wrapped Pendant, then move on to a more advanced setting for their bracelet. Some wire wrapping experience is helpful, but not necessary. A variety of stones will be offered for student use.
